Bodhchandra of Manipur: War, Democracy, Accession and the 1949 Merger presents a detailed documentary study of Maharaja Bodhchandra Singh and the extraordinary political transformations that reshaped Manipur between the Second World War and the early years of independent India.

Bodhchandra inherited a monarchy already constrained by the political system created after the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891. His reign then passed through wartime devastation, democratic mobilisation, constitutional reform, the Manipur State Constitution Act of 1947, accession to the Dominion of India, the election of Manipur’s first Legislative Assembly, and finally the Merger Agreement signed at Shillong on 21 September 1949.

Rather than reducing the Maharaja to either a hero, victim or betrayer, the book reconstructs his changing constitutional position through contemporary evidence. Particular attention is given to the distinction between the 1947 Instrument of Accession and the 1949 Merger Agreement, the powers of the elected Assembly and Council of Ministers, the Shillong negotiations, and documentary evidence showing that Bodhchandra’s freedom to leave Shillong before signing was restricted.

The book also examines the functioning of Manipur’s elected government before merger, the Assembly’s response to the agreement, the transfer of administration on 15 October 1949, and Bodhchandra’s later life as a Maharaja without governmental authority.
